We’re doing concerts for elementary and middle school students this week. My face isn’t fully awake until at least 11 am.

That’s ok, most of the kids at that age won’t know the difference.

Ah, youth concerts. I ‘member those days.
“How many times do you think the brass can make it through Star Wars in a day?” “Dunno. How many times are we playing this set?”

Fortunately, nothing quite that heavy. But still a lot of playing. M-F this week, with M of next week, two shows a day, with three on Wednesday. We’ll gripe, but it will be a nice paycheck for a few hours of work.

I love these concerts. As a kid, they inspired me with what I could sound like some day.

We grumble about doing so many shows (13 in all over 5 weekdays), but they are actually pretty fun. I know the kids enjoy them. When I was interviewing for college teaching jobs, they always asked why I wanted the job. I said that in my career, there has always been somebody for whom I can say, “If it weren’t for that person, I wouldn’t be here today. I hope somebody might say the same about me.” Around this time, I had a chance to talk to my HS Latin teacher. She was one of those people for me at a difficult time in my life, and I told her that. She was genuinely moved, but she also said, “Realize t hat you might inspire somebody to do something and never know that you did.” I keep that in mind during all of these school shows.

I just had a student come by my office and tell me that I made a difference. Same feeling. It’s why I do this too.

I was playing a student concert last fall and one of my former trumpet students, who is now a band director, came to the stage to say hello. That was really neat, and he had a lot of nice things to say about our lessons. That meant a lot.
